Internet of Things - IoT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers (UIDs) and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. A thing in the internet of things can be a person with a heart monitor implant, a farm animal with a biochip transponder, an automobile that has built-in sensors to alert the driver when tire pressure is low or any other natural or man-made object that can be assigned an IP address and is able to transfer data over a network.

IoT is integration of things to Internet  (IoT) which is the extension of Internet connectivity into physical devices and everyday objects. Embedded firmware or chip in electronic devices, Internet connectivity and other forms of hardware such as sensors makes up IoT. This technology enables these devices to communicate and interact with others over the Internet, and they can be remotely monitored and controlled. This is currently having huge application in building automation and or building management systems..

Application of IoT - Internet of Things.

As shown in the diagram above, the applicaton to real life is endless, in the area of transmitting small data packages especially over long distance. The technology as developed, is Low Power Wide Area Network - LPWAN. Different standards of competing communication have been developed for this Wireless communication technology, designed for sending small data packages over long distances, operating on a battery . Principal amongst them are LORA, Sigfox and Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT).

IoT can be deployed for small data packages harvesting, for monitoring and control. It's application is endless in almost all sphere's of Life. in Medical Fields, for Animal/Pet monitoring, Public utilities such as street light, CCTV cameras, Waste Management, monitoring and control. Divers form of Alarm systems can be managed by this technology - IoT.

The advantages of this Technology - IoT are;

  • 1) Low power consumption, typically battery powered
  • 2) Operate on the free bandwidth
  • 3) Low maintenace cost
  • 4) Reliable data output
  • 5) Distance - Long range
  • 6) overcome barriers of difficult Terrains
  • 7) Easy to Operate

IoT Devices:

some IoT devices are created for consumer use, such as   wearable technology (as part of Internet of Wearable Things (IoWT)), Heart/Organ monitoring in health sector, home automation, automated home or smart home could be based on a platform or hubs that control smart devices and appliances. IoT devices are becoming part of the larger concept of home automation, which can include lighting, heating and air conditioning, media and security systems.
